Counselor

Cushing ISD Counselor's Vision

I believe that a child's academic success is directly related to their health, safety, and wellbeing. The counseling department strives to improve and protect our students and staff. We work diligently to identify and remove barriers that prevent learning. Our goal is for all students at Cushing ISD will acquire the academic, career, personal and social skills to reach their fullest educational potential and be well-prepared to meet challenges and high expectations.

All Cushing ISD students will be supported by comprehensive school guidance and a counseling program that facilitates skills children need to successfully grow and learn to manage their lives as healthy, responsible, competent and productive community members who respect themselves and others. As productive, life-long learners, Cushing ISD students can overcome obstacles and achieve their fullest potential, making a positive difference in our school and community.

I believe that when a student's physiological, safety, love and belonging and esteem needs are met they have the ability to achieve self-actualization or the desire to become the best one can be. These needs are part of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs or Maslow's Needs Pyramid, which is a motivational theory in psychology comprising of five tiers of human needs. This theory states that lower level (basic needs) like food, water, and safety must be met first before higher needs can be fulfilled. Working together with students, parents/guardians, and teachers to satisfy as many needs as possible is very important in our goal of prioritizing education.

Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs

As the Cushing ISD counselor, I work to assist students to set and reach personal goals. Parent/Guardian support and cooperation can help make your child's school years a rewarding and memorable experience. It is my hope that parents and students feel free to utilize these services. Please note, school counselors do not provide "therapy" or "traditional counseling." However, referrals for multiple outside counseling services are available for children experiencing grief, divorce, family separation, military deployment or mental, emotional, and social health concerns.

SELECTIVE SERVICE SYSTEM

Selective Service registration is required by law as the first part of a fair and equitable system that, if authorized by the President and Congress, would rapidly provide personnel to the Department of Defense while at the same time providing for an Alternative Service Program for conscientious objectors. By registering, a young man remains eligible for jobs, state-based student aid in 31 states, Federally-funded job training, and U.S. citizenship for immigrant men.

Federal Law requires nearly all male US citizens and male immigrants, 18 through 25, register with Selective Service.
