The Cushing Student Council attended their Spring Conference in Hallsville February 23rd.  They enjoyed a fun-filled day of Student Council activities including a walk for the American Cancer Society. Each chapter asked donors for sponsor pledges for the walk to raise money for the American Cancer Society.  The theme was Striving To Untangle Cancers Oppression (STUCO). Cushing Bearkat Little Dribblers 13-14 year-old boys played in the Cushing Tournament held Feb 16th-18th.  The Cushing team earned 2nd place in the tournament following the Central Heights team.  Bearkat team members shown: H. Ms. Simmons and Ms. Dillon's third graders have been studying volcanos.  To reinforce learning, students created their own miniature volcanos and took them outside to set them off.  They decorated their volcanos with prehistoric scenery and used vinegar and baking soda along with their choice of food coloring to create some dramatic lava flows.  The classes' cross-curricular project helped them learn about prehistoric geography and climate, geology, and a little chemistry and art as well.  See more pictures.

Congratulations to the Cushing FFA.  They competed in the states's largest Ag Mechanics Contest at the Houston Livestock show.  The construction of their 28 foot gooseneck cattle trailer won them many useful tools.

CHS Art Club members have worked diligently for the last several months to re-create a painting from a master artist on a special "canvas."  Students painted ceiling tiles, a unique idea that has generated a lot of interest.  The students' artwork is hung on the ceiling in front of the High School office.  Next time you're in the high school hallway, LOOK UP!

The UIL Solo and Ensemble contest was held on February 10th.  The High School contest was held at SFA, while Junior High students competed at Raguet Elementary.  The following band students received a first division rating:  Front Row:  L. Gallegos, C. Teichman, C. Pitman.  Middle Row:  S. Thornton, C. Langham, K. Rigsby, V. Patel.  Back Row:  B. Vaughn, J. King, R. Whitehead, and M. Pickard.  Ms. Rigsby also qualified for the Texas State UIL Solo contest by receiving a first division rating on a Class One solo performed by memory.  The State UIL Contest will be held May 27th and 29th in San Marcus.
Congratulations to the Cushing FFA on their success at the San Antonio Livestock Show held February 17th & 18th.  They received a blue ribbon for their 28 ft. trailer.  The Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo will be Feb 28 - March 2.  Later in March, students will head back to Houston to show their pigs and broilers.  Good luck!
