Bingo!  Cushing 3rd through 6th grade students participated in the Bluebonnet Reading program this year.  Sixty-eight students read at least 10 books and were rewarded for their hard work with a fun afternoon playing "Bluebonnet Bingo."  Students had a great time as librarian Valori Poskey called out the numbers and handed out the prizes she had been gathering all year.  More photos

Scott Dee's Physics class had a unique assignment -- to design and construct a catapult which would launch a standard softball with the greatest possible accuracy to a target located 40 meters away. Students were given two practice launches and then each student had ten minutes to fire three shots.  Top finishers were: Logan (35 meters), Kelly (34 meters), Micah (26 meters) and Anthony (24 meters).

Mrs. Simmons' third graders are thrilled to have a new computer lab at the elementary.  Students are using computers to practice their math and reading skills.  Some fun web sites for learning at home can be found here:

Primary  (K - 1st)

Elementary  (Grades 2 - 6)

The second grade classes (shown at left with teachers Tammy Beard and Tina Kinney) have been reading a story called Firefighters by Robert Maass that describes what it means to be a firefighter, including life at the firehouse, practice drills, and service to the community.  The classes invited Mr. Anthony Cruz, a local firefighter, to come and talk to the children further about the equipment used, a fireman's job, and fire safety tips. He brought all of his equipment to show the children and even let them see how the air tank works. He also visited the PPCD class.  See more photos.

Twelve years ago Linda Sides' newly created World Geography class decided to paint a map of the world on her classroom wall while they waited for textbooks to arrive.  According to Mrs. Sides, it has been an extremely useful teaching tool for her classes.

This year Mrs. Sides' student aides decided to paint another wall in her classroom.  This time they chose to do Wonders of the World.  They painted Big Ben, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Great Pyramids of Egypt, and other famous sites.  As they painted, they thought of other events too important to be left out.  For example, the Shuttle Columbia because the explosion impacted the Nacogdoches area.  They also decided the Twin Towers needed a place of remembrance.  The students who created the wall art are:  M. Owens, H. Nelson, K. Plunkett and J. Cole.
