132 fith, sixth, seventh and eighth

weeks to prepare their presentations. After researching and
selecting their topic, students had to create an exhibit which included
a statement of purpose, a prediction (hypothesis that can be tested), a
data graph or chart showing the experiment's results, and a
conclusion. There were two divisions: 5th-6th Grade and
7th-8th Grade, with first, second and third place winners in each

Mr.
Dee’s Chemistry students visited the lab to learn about decomposition
reactions. They set up an experiment
using hydrogen peroxide and learned about measurement techniques and
lab
safety. At left, Adam, C.J. and Jake watch their experiment
unfold. |

Students had some hands-on learning
in Scott Dee’s high school Physics class. In “Crash Test
Dummies”, students had to construct a vehicle that could
transport and protect its passengers (two large grade A eggs) as they
travel down an inclined ramp, across a length of floor and crash into a
concrete wall. The winning vehicle was determined by mass,
length, and velocity; faster, lighter, and smaller vehicles received
the highest scores. Vehicles had to be constructed exclusively
from wood and paper, except for the wheels and axles. The
“passengers” were secured in the vehicles with seatbelts (lengths of
string). Mr. Dee is happy to report that a number of the
passengers survived the trip down the ramp, owing to the ingenuity of
their car makers. More photos> |

High school students in Shelia
Beddingfield's Algebra I class use interactive skill-building software
to reinforce their math skills in the computer lab. When an
assignment is completed the software will analyze the student's answers
and then advance the student or begin remediation activities based on
the results. Reports generated by the software help the teacher
check student skill levels and pinpoint areas where more instruction is
needed. |
