District Receives Loss Prevention Grant

Cushing ISD has been awarded a loss prevention grant of $3500 from the Texas Association of School Boards’ Risk Management Fund.
TASB is a voluntary nonprofit association established in 1949 to serve local Texas school districts.  The TASB Fund awarded a total of $550,000 in competitive grants to 206 public school districts and education entities this year.   School board members are the largest group of publicly elected officials in the state and the districts they represent serve more than 4.5 million Texas public school students.  Cushing ISD will use grant monies to help implement school safety initiatives and reduce the potential for property loss.

Their dad, John Fergerson, is a U.S. Marine and a graduate of Cushing ISD. John is currently on his third deployment to Iraq.   The basket was a way of saying thank you for the sacrifice John and his  family have made the past few years.  John is a hero because he is protecting our country. His children are heroes because they are giving up time with their dad so that we can be safe. Gifts were provided through donations from students and faculty at Cushing ISD, Cushing Food Mart, Cushing Florist, Beckham Hardware, and Boren Tax Service.

Students in Scott Dee’s high school Physics class recently completed their “Crash Test Dummies” project.  Students had to construct a vehicle that could transport and protect its passengers (two large grade A eggs) as they traveled down an inclined ramp and across a length of floor to crash into a concrete wall.  The winning vehicle was determined by mass, length, and velocity; faster, lighter, and smaller vehicles received the highest scores.  Vehicles had to be constructed exclusively from wood and paper, except for the wheels and axles.  The “passengers” were secured in the vehicles with seatbelts (lengths of string).  A few "passengers"  actually survived their trip down the ramp.

Cushing third grade classes have been learning about celebrations and festivals around the world.  They are discovering how a celebration can reflect the culture of the area in which it takes place.  To help them relate to this learning in a fun way, they celebrated Mardi Gras Month in February by creating their own floats and masks and holding a parade through the elementary hallways.  At left:  Cushing third graders display their Mardi Gras floats.  More photos>

Cushing Elementary Pre-K, Kindergarten and first graders celebrated the 100th Day of School on February 1st.  Students had fun commemorating the day in a 100 different ways.  Kindergarten classes made crowns with 100 polka-dots. First grade classes had a counting party, with each student bringing 100 items (pencils, paper clips, M&M's, marshmallows, etc.)  Students also released 100 helium balloons with messages attached. The message on the cards asks the person who finds the balloon to write the class and let them know how far it traveled.  Students have already received one response - from a lady in San Augustine, who found the balloon on her husband's hunting lease. Interestingly, the school also received a letter from a lady in Belle Bower, Louisiana, who found a balloon on her husband's Louisiana hunting lease.  The balloon was released last year, on January 26, 2007.  She found it on January 27th, 2008, exactly a year and a day after the balloon was released!
